Martin Arnold were appointed by the London Borough of Redbridge to act as Clerk of Works for the expansion and refurbishment building works at Parkhill Infant and Junior School.

Parkhill Infants and Junior School needed to expand their school from a 3FE to a 4FE and chose to do so by expanding buildings in five different locations across their site by adding single storey, flat roofed modular buildings on piled foundations. These were:

Building 1 – Remodelling and extension of reception classroom
Building 2 – Two classroom infant school block with covered walkway & play area.
Building 3 – Dining room & kitchen extension
Building 4 – Staff room extension and infant school car park
Building 5 – Junior school extension comprising four classrooms, two group rooms, entrance foyer and toilets which included photovoltaic panel array to roof.

One challenge involved in the project was that works took place during term time and the school remained a live environment, meaning that the Health & Safety of pupils, teachers and visitors was of utmost concern.

The solution was to use modular buildings, enabling most of the works to be carried out offsite. This also helped ensure that the programme was completed on schedule and to budget, helping the school to expand whilst seamlessly integrating the new builds and extensions with existing buildings and surroundings.
