Following their successful bid to implement RHWL Architects’ design approved by London Borough Barnet Council, Thomas Sinden Ltd instructed Martin Arnold to lead on technical design for the Jewish Community Secondary School (JCoSS) Wing D Extension.

JCoSS is a large complex of 2-3 storey buildings organised in four wings (A-D) connected via central circulation. The school was established in 2010 and provides facility for 1360 students.

The Wing D extension replaces an existing rooftop terrace and sits directly above school’s Sports Hall. It provides 3no. of general classrooms, 2no. of specialist classrooms (design technology and information technology) with associated circulation (linked with the existing circulation) and storage as well as a centrally located outdoor workshop terrace connected to the existing accommodation. External staircase provides alternative means of escape.

The existing Sports Hall’s structure had been designed with future expansion in mind and therefore did not require any additional strengthening. The extension is of steel frame with block infills and insulated render finish. Existing pre-cast floor planks as well as approx. 1.5m high parapets. Raised floor provides space for services.

Fire, acoustic and ventilation strategies were the key considerations for design implementation. The strategies were designed in accordance with BB100, BB93 and BB101 respectively and implemented via collaboration with Consultants and Building Control.

Classrooms feature suspended profiled acoustic ceilings by Architectural Profiles which incorporate Monodraught windcatchers grilles with motorised dampers and lighting. Circulation spaces have suspended acoustic ceilings with light fittings and roof lights incorporated within.

Structural metal deck has been used for extension’s flat roof finished with single ply membrane which incorporates roof lights, wind catchers, automatically open vents and man-safe system.

Steel frame staircase have been cladded with Paroc insulated metal panels and glazed with Profilit.
