Following a fire in January 2022, which caused significant damage to Ironmonger Row Baths’ Basement Floor, Principal Contractor KJ Evans Electrical appointed Martin Arnold to act as Design Coordinator on behalf of buildings owner, London Borough of Islington and its operator, Greenwich Leisure Limited.

The building is located within St Luke’s Conservation Area and is designated as a building which makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.

Ironmonger Row Baths was originally designed by AWS Cross Architects; today the building’s East Wing contains the public baths which were constructed in 1931. The West Wing containing the swimming pool was designed by KMB Cross Architects and added in 1938.

The building was refurbished and remodelled internally with a number of new internal and external features such as a new, glazed entrance and canopy, designed by Tim Ronalds Architects; planning permission was granted in 2010 and works were completed in 2016.

The works included a full reinstatement of the Basement Floor with a remodelling of the internal layout and full fit-out featuring a new reception with a hidden fire curtain, slatted timber wall and ceiling panelling, wood logs and salt bricks in the saunas as well as new wall tiles and door sets which resulted in fully transformed internal space.

One of the key aspects for improved fire safety features – alongside fire compartmentation and firestopping – was the design of an additional smoke ventilation shaft to support smoke distribution out of the building in case of fire; Martin Arnold assisted with the detailed design as well as the planning application.

The Baths were fully re-open to the public in January 2024.
