Martin Arnold were appointed by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), whilst working closely with London Borough of Islington (LBI) in the Autumn of 2018, following a fire at Highbury Leisure Centre.

The fire, which was widely reported within the local press at the time, caused significant damage to the Pool Hall, Wet Changing Facilities, various roof areas to the plant room and the health and fitness centre.

Martin Arnold’s appointment was on a multi-disciplinary level, throughout all RIBA Stages associated with the project as Project Manager and Technical Consultant, Cost Consultant, Principal Designer / CDM Advisor, Designer and Contract Administrator/Employers Agent and Clerk of Works.

The project included the production of a full set of Employers Requirements to incorporate the full replacement of the heating and pool plant following the fire at the Centre. Martin Arnold and Energy Engineering worked closely to develop a set of Employers Requirements that suited the needs of the Client, whilst designing a scheme which could be delivered within programme and on budget. Energy Engineering then worked closely with Martin Arnold and the Client to constantly review the work completed and assisted in the commissioning of the system.

The project was split across three key stages, with both traditional and design and build led contracts, and did not come without its challenges: Storms Ciara and Dennis caused some logistical issues at the start of the project in February 2020, and these were followed by the obvious disruption of the Global Coronavirus Pandemic in the many months that were to follow.

The forced closure of the public areas of the Centre allowed works in some areas to be progressed quicker than originally programmed enabling the project to reach Practical Completion earlier than anticipated with the Centre ready to welcome customers back for the reopening of the leisure facilities in Spring 2021.
