Martin Arnold Ltd were appointed by the London Borough of Bexley to assist in the design and implementation of the expansion of the existing SEN facilities at Endeavour Academy.
The brief included the provision of two separate buildings, each capable of accommodating 16-20 new pupils, age between 11-16, in addition to the existing provision for 63 pupils provided within the 2-storey block completed in 1970s. This was in order to meet high demand of such facilities within the Borough and to serve the school as well as the local community.
In order to speed up the delivery process and minimise cost, the new buildings were designed to enable a modular construction process, which also formed part of the initial scope.
The remains of the existing, single storey Caretaker’s House building, situated in south-east corner of the site, along Woodside Road, has been identified as a suitable location for one of the two required buildings. Red brick cladding has been chosen for this building in order to relate to the neighbouring Speech & Language Therapy Clinic building. The chosen cladding material, as well as the scale of the building, relates to the character of Woodside Road which is occupied predominantly by single storey dwellings.
The second building has been located along the western boundary, between the existing school building and the sports hall. The proposed yellow brick as the cladding material for this building relates to yellow/cream colour of the main school building.
Existing vegetation was protected and forms part of courtyards / outdoor areas serving both buildings. The main entrances have been recessed, ensuring strong, easily recognisable presence within the built form, whilst providing weather protection. Obscured glazing provides privacy and minimises distraction and acts as a source of dispersed, calming natural light.
